Sentencing principles
Section 11 of the Juvenile Offenders Ordinance provides that:
- No child shall be sentenced to imprisonment or committed to prison in default of payment of a fine, damages, or costs.
- No young person shall be sentenced to imprisonment if he can be suitably dealt with in any other way.
- A young person sentenced to imprisonment shall not be allowed to associate with adult prisoners.
In arriving at the sentence which is in the best interests of the child, the court will obtain readily available information about the juvenile such as his or her general conduct, home surroundings, school records and medical history
